useful concept? or just an obstacle?(perspective on minjok)

We are one minjok.” That is the most common thought among Koreans when it comes to “Koreans”. Then, what does minjok mean in this sentence? That first statement is not a fact. Minjok in this sentence means a group of people who share the same history and culture. However, Korea is becoming a multicultural society which means that foreigners who are one hundred percent different from Koreans are coming to Korea which makes the first sentence a false statement.
Then, where did this “minjok” come from? In order to know this, there should be a deep understanding of the Korean history. Straightly and concisely speaking, the concept Minjok started from the colonial period. During WWII, Japan enlarged its territory throughout Asia by using ultranationalism, making people around Asia to believe that the root between them and the Japanese are same. Also, in Korea, Japan made Koreans to believe in nationalism through imposing Koreans to change their names into Japanese and use Japanese instead of Korean. However, of course, Korean intellectuals like Shin Chae-ho and Yi Kwang-su did not want Japan to take over Korea. To do their jobs of sending away the Japanese, they needed unity among Koreans. In order to gather Korean to one, there should be a belief that they were one from the start. That’s why shin Chae-ho wrote “Joseon Sanggosa”. According to this book, Koreans are all descendants of Dangun which is an empire that first started in Korea. The book talks about the era of Dangun through the fall of Balhae and depicts Korean as a warlike race which have fought to preserve the “Korean” identity. So the tale of Dangun seemed like concrete evidence that could make Korean to one and it really worked. Koreans gathered together and fought for independence and to save their unique national heritage of Dangun. Since the colonial period and even after the independence, Koreans believed in Dangun and really regard all Koreans as the descendants of Dangun.

The idea of nationalism in Korea and Japan originated from Europe called the romanticnationalism. Romantic nationalism has a deep relationship with details such as language, culture and religion instead of physical appearances. So there are folklores like Dangun in Korea that seem like the evidence for the grouping. This is when Brothers Grimm became quite popular because the stories of Brothers Grimm are very easy to understand but quite deep when looked in the perspective of “nationalism”. Due to the Romantic Nationalism, France could be able to succeed in French Revolution. Korea’s concept of minjok is very alike to the meaning of Romantic Nationalism. Like mentioned before, in order to support or to prove nationalism and minjok, there are folklores. Also, the language, which was another support of Romantic Nationalism, was used when the concept of minjok was made because Korean language is only used among Korean which differentiates from others and again prove  the term Minjok.

Not only Korea had this concept Minjok that held a group of people together. Japan and Germany also had this idea. Especially, in Germany, during WWII, there was a huge wave of Nazism which gathered German in to one. So due to Nazism, German believed  that they are superior than any other group of people which can be seen as the term Minjok. However, the ending of Nazism was very bad. Due to Nazism, almost ten million innocent people were sacrificed because they were just “different” from German. So Germany does not like the concept of nationalism because they realized that the end to nationalism is not good. Also, like Germany, Japan prevailed ultranationalism among Asia to make other countries believe that they are one. However, Japan lost in the war which made them learn that the end to nationalism is bad. So the end to nationalism for Germany and Japan were very bad. On the contrary, Korea kind of benefited from nationalism or the spirit of minjok because that was the source of their power during the colonial period. Still now, nationalism can affect the society. For example, one of the reason why North Korea and South Korea need to unite is because they are one minjok. So to Korea, the concept of Minjok gave impetus to national pride and the reason to make two Koreas united.

fall of Nazi& how they brought nationalism

Although through the term Minjok, two Koreas could unify, looking at the big picture, having the concept of minjok does not seem like a good idea. The reason why the though of minjok worked during the colonial period is because it was true. There were only Korean who shared the same culture and language. However, nowadays, there are foreigners on the land of Korea trying to fit in the society full of same people. In other words, it was okay to be proud of being “one minjok” but temporarily, Korea is becoming a multicultural society which makes the term false. If Korean keep holding to the fact that they are one minjok, there will be no huge improvements in Korean society. By having the thought that they are one minjok, they could gather easily like during the world cup season 2002 when Koreans were called the “Red Devils”. That worked in the old days. However, now, only insisting one culture cannot work. Due to globalization, products that are invented from one country are exported to other countries. Therefore, to succeed in this era, there should be an understanding of other cultures. That is why minjok can negatively affect the Korean society. If Korean keep pursuing the concept of minjok, they won’t be able to see other cultures which can cause problems between other countries and Korea.
Minjok was a really important concept before the globalization and could be when it comes to North Korea. However, after globalization and when foreigners started to move into Korea, minjok cannot work anymore. In fact, the concept of minjok will only bring a havoc to Korean society. Therefore, if Korean do not want to learn after a huge mistake like Germans and Japanese did, they should let go of the minjok and go on.

Kang Ho-dong back in showbiz

Announcing his retirement

Kang Ho-dong, who took a break from showbusiness in September last year in the wake of a tax evasion scandal, appeared on the set to start shooting the SBS variety show "Star King" in Seoul on Monday.
Before recording the show, he seemed emotionally overwhelmed as he expressed his feelings about hosting the show again to reporters.

"I'm so excited about returning to television, but at the same time I'm worried if I still have what it takes to make this a success. But I've missed all of this a lot," said a teary-eyed Kang. "I'll give it my best shot, with all the enthusiasm I had back when I was starting out."

The episode is due to air on Nov. 10. Kang will also host several more programs on MBC and KBS.

Starking
Kang Ho Dong stated before the recording, “I have butterflies in my stomach as I am making a comeback and I wonder if I can still do well and worry about it, but I have missed this very much. When you take a break from work you realize just how much love the viewers gave you and it is just so special, and I am thankful from the bottom of my heart. I really felt all of this during my time off.”
Kang Ho Dong’s first recording was very peaceful and pleasant. When child guests appeared he would get down on his knees to meet them at their eye level and showed that he is still the thoughtful and considerate person he was known to be. He also very enthusiastically performed Psy‘s ‘horse dance’ to show that the king of variety shows has finally returned.
Looking forward to your amazing works!!!

Energy Drinks!!!! FEEL GOOD?!?!

During midterm or the finals, 80% of the students at least take a sip of energy drink to stay awake.
In energy drinks, there is caffeine which is the cause that make students feel ALIVE. However, over-consuming caffeine can cause serious problems. So on this post, I'd like to tell you about the drawbacks of energy drinks.

/A 14-year-old Maryland girl, Anais Fournier, died of a heart attack from caffeine toxicity after drinking just two cans of Monster energy drinks, and her parents are suing the company./

Like the happening above, caffeine can seriously influence our bodies.

The amount of caffeine in energy drinks is hard to pin down, because many are marketed as supplements, rather than as foods, allowing them to wiggle around FDA regulations and labeling laws. The FDA does not allow soda to have more than 0.02 percent caffeine, but energy drinks aren’t subject to this limit.
A 24-ounce can of Monster Energy Drink supposedly has 240 mg of caffeine, approximately equivalent to seven cups of coffee. But health experts have voiced concerns about energy drinks over the past few years, saying the caffeine content can be as high as 550 mg.
Health experts have been trying to get our attention about the issue of energy drink consumption by kids for some time. In 2011, the Journal of Pediatricspublished a scary report titled “Health Effects of Energy Drinks on Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults” warning that the consequences included “palpitations, seizures, strokes, and even sudden death.” The authors also specifically warned parents that the drinks could be dangerous for kids with heart problems, diabetes, or ADHD.
This year, the National Council of Sports and Fitness issued a report, Youth and Energy Drinks, warning that kids confuse energy drinks like Monster with the sports drinks marketed by their sports heroes.
This isn’t just an American problem; in fact we may be behind the eight ball in documenting the issue. The Medical Journal of Australia recently published a study recording 297 reported incidents of caffeine reactions from energy drinks. The median age of those affected: 17. Also in Korea, energy drinks are getting popular and there are drinks called "super-caffeine drinks". Teenagers mix energy drinks and create a new mixture that does not look healthy at all.

Queen, the legend

Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide,
No escape from reality.

Probably, most of the people around the world would know what that song is. It is "Bohemian rhapsody" by Queen. Queen is a band that originated from England. Especially, Freddy Mercury who is the vocal of this band is extremely famous. Although Freddy died of AIDs due to his dirty sex life, he is regarded as one of the people who sing very well. He had an amazing talent in music and he showed his talent through his band, Queen.

Freddy Mercury did not take any music lessons except for choir lessons when he was young. He just had an amazing voice and talent. All of Queen's songs were composed by Freddie. Something that is more surprising is that he thought of the melodies in middle of parties when he was drunk.
Another thing. Freddy Mercury was bisexual. This means that he had a really dirty sex life. There is something that Freddy said. "My bed is big enough to hold 20 people at once." Because of his sex life, he got AIDs but he really enjoyed his life.

His clothes are very....ummmmm yeah......but!! Because Freddie Mercury had long legs and amazing body structure, the clothes he wore seemed okay. If other people had worn that suit....I really do not want to think about that.

The behind story of Queen
In the band Queen, there are only men. Then why is their band name queen? That's because Freddy Mercury. He insisted to name his band queen although other members did not want to. He formed the band during his college years.
